In 2006, North Bay Children’s Center expanded its Marin County child care into Sonoma County at two school sites in Petaluma; Cherry Valley and McDowell Elementary Schools. The NBCC program at Cherry Valley provides preschool for children ages 3-5 and before and after school care for children ages 5-12. During the school year when the Cherry Valley campus is closed, NBCC offers half day or full day camp programs for school age children.
NBCC expanded its Novato campus’ Garden of Eatin’ programs to include the Cherry Valley site. Through the Cherry Valley Garden of Eatin’ program our children experience first hand the connection between how food grows, how it is harvested and how the children bring it to the table.
Being on the campus at Cherry Valley NBCC has the opportunity to offer “school readiness” and “school connection” opportunities to the children and their families. NBCC has a close relationship with the Principal, Kindergarten teachers, 1st-6th grade teachers, administrative staff and counselors to offer a seamless transition into Kindergarten and future childhood education opportunities.
Parent involvement in the NBCC program is vital. Ongoing, open communication enables staff to work together with parents to ensure a smooth transition into the program and remain connected throughout the child’s NBCC experience. Parents have opportunities to participate in the classroom throughout the year through family interactions The classrooms hold family potlucks each semester as well as Parent’s Night Out, a respite for families, offered several times throughout the school year.
“Schools across the state and nation are focused on supporting all students to reach high standards and to close the achievement gap. In Petaluma City Schools , we know that we cannot do this alone and that by partnering with other agencies and programs we will better educate our students. The North Bay Children’s Center is a shining example of a powerful program that greatly contributes to our students’ success. North Bay Children’s Center gives children a head start by preparing them for school thereby increasing their chances to succeed in reading, math and science.” Dr. Greta Viguie, Superintendent Petaluma City Schools
